TRAINING FOR EMPLOYERS
The Principals of AKI Recruiters have over two decades' experience in successfully implementing recognized best practices in training Indigenous peoples in both community and urban settings. As the President of AKI General Contracting, Nona Vincent has provided on-the-job construction trades training to Algonquin community members for over 15 years.

Ross Holden has been working with industry, unions, and Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) funding agreement holders to develop, promote, and deliver innovative Indigenous trades training programs for the past five years. Best practices in Indigenous trades training include:
-
Small (12-15 people) all-Indigenous cohorts
-
True partnerships (including accountability for results) between Indigenous communities/organizations, training partners, industry, and governments.
-
Wrap-around support e.g. transportation and childcare subsidies, access to Indigenous Elders and mentors, cultural and healing components, etc.
-
‘Try-a-trade’ training i.e. exposing participants to various trades to determine which they are most suited for.
• Paid learning and work placements.
Training Indigenous persons in the skilled trades 'from scratch' achieves several goals:
-
eliminates uncertainty related to self-identification
-
contributes to meeting IPP commitments related to both training and employment
-
ensures a steady pipeline of skilled tradespersons in times of scarcity
